Timeline
of relevant SDG Targets for the intersection of
the Health Womanifesto item and the No Poverty SDG goal.
2035
Earnings inequality between lowest and highest earners in the city has reduced by 30%, as measured by the Gini Coefficient
2038
The gap in healthy life expectancy between the most and least deprived areas of Bristol will have been reduced by 20%
The social and economic determinants of health must be intrinsically linked to this goal, it is not enough to purely focus on health issues, the structural inequality and segregation within Bristol must be addressed in order for differences in life expectancy to be impacted.
BWV Actions: Ensuring that the council are implementing the findings of projects that focus on the most deprived areas of Bristol such as Women of Lawrence Hill, the City Listening Project and the Impact of COVID-19 on Women in Bristol. Campaigning for a holistic view of health to be taken.
2045
Household debt has reduced by 50% since 2018
The number of women in debt has been rising, but more concerningly of the people over indebted in the UK, women make up 55%. They are also far more likely to get into debt to pay for household necessities. Women are becoming more indebted for a variety of reasons including the gender pay gap, intimate partner violence, and they are more likely to have a dependent. When addressing household debt all these factors have to be taken into account.
BWV Actions: 1. Using hustings to raise the gendered issue of household debt and ensure that all responses are stratified by race gender and class
2. To work collaboratively with partner organisations such as Bristol Law Centre to make debt advice accessible to women across the city, especially those in deprived outer areas
2045
The use of high interest, short-term ‘payday loans’ has reduced by 50% since 2018
Struggling to make cash last until the end of the month is systemic of low-wage insecure jobs. Young people and young women are particularly vulnerable to this, with over 40% of young women stating they struggle to get to the end of the month. In order to prevent the use of payday loans, particularly for young women their must be affordable childcare that allows them to work better hours and jobs, as well as equal pay to men.
2047
Earnings inequality between lowest and highest earners in the city has reduced by 50%, as measured by the Gini Coefficient
This goal cannot be achieved without taking significant steps to close the gender and ethnicity pay gap. Bristol is a city of extreme wealth and extreme poverty, and the areas of highest deprivation are more likely to include BAME communities and a higher percentage of female households. Therefore, in order to close income inequality specific Bristol localities have to be targeted as well as specific, female-led sectors.
